Product Overview

Is Vector Marketing A SCAM? (Logo of Vector Marketing)

Product Name: Vector Marketing

What’s It About: Direct selling company for Cutco Cutlery

Joining Fees: You need to buy $200 worth of demonstration knives.

Owner/Founder: Don Freda

Website: https://www.vectormarketing.com/

Summary: The good news is Vector Marketing is a legitimate direct selling company that markets Cutco’s products. They’re dominating in the kitchenware niche and made a lot of remarkable sales records, but I wish I could say the same for their business opportunity. Because of the bad reputation in public and numerous lawsuits against them, their business opportunity doesn’t sit well with me.

Overall SCAM Rating: 50/100 (Normal)

What Is Vector Marketing?

Vector Marketing is a direct selling company founded by Don Freda in 1981, and Cutco Cutlery then acquired it in 1985.

Cutco Cutlery is a kitchenware company specializing in manufacturing high-quality knife sets, and they’ve been operating for over 60 years.

They hired a lot of direct sellers back in the days, and Vector Marketing is the most successful one. Through their MLM marketing strategies, over 15 million homes in North America owned Cutco’s knife sets.

Simply put, Vector Marketing = Cutco Cutlery because they handle the marketing operations of their parent company.

Customer Feedback On Vector Marketing

Take a look at the screenshots below:

Customer Reviews on Vector Marketing, as seen on BBB.

These customers are complaining about the same thing.

After receiving the wrong or damaged products from Cutco, they’re asked by the reps to ship them back to Cutco before the company can process their product refund/replacement requests, so they follow what they’ve been told.

But, somehow, the company took a long time to return the product, and even worst, Cutco has had canceled customers’ refund requests without any valid reason.

You can see more customer complaints about the problematic Vector and Cutco’s refund and return process on the platforms like Consumer Affairs and Better Business Bureau (BBB).

I don’t know you. But for me, it’s a big red flag as Vector Marketing and Cutco are dishonest with their customers, making them look like a potential SCAM.

I mean, if I’m the customer who’s paying hundreds for a knife, shouldn’t I deserve the best customer service?

How To Make Money With Vector Marketing

Unlike the MLM companies that I’ve reviewed before, making money with Vector Marketing is quite straightforward.

There’s no sophisticated compensation plan that is hard-to-understand, and the process is very simple. Note that I say it’s simple, but not easy.

For your better understanding, I’ll give you briefly explain how you can join Vector Marketing and make an income out of it.

1. Get Started With Vector Marketing

All you need to do is fill up the application form and wait to be interviewed by the company to join Vector Marketing.

Many people say Vector Marketing is free to join. Still, I can barely tell it’s free to join the company because once you’re recruited, you’ll be asked to invest in a $200 set of Cutco Knives for demonstrating purposes during your appointments with prospects.

2. Make Money

Being a salesperson of Vector, you make money by selling knives, and there’s no store or booth for you to do this in.

It’s your responsibility to go door to door or organize a “knives” parties/promotion campaign, just to make demonstration appointments.

You will get paid by Vector Marketing every time you made an appointment. It’s a guaranteed wage that is ranging from $12.50 to $17.50 per appointment.

On the other hand, you can earn a 10% commission for every sale you make, and this commission will go up to 30% if you manage to sell $24,000 worth of knives.

According to them, Vector Marketing is a single-level marketing company, which means their reps can earn an extra commission for recruiting new members, but they don’t get paid on a multi-level downline.

3 Reasons Why I Don’t Recommend Vector Marketing

1. Overpriced Products

As there’s a saying goes – Images speak louder than words. Please take a look at the screenshots below.

Overpriced Cutco's products

Cheaper Alternatives

I found similar kitchen knives on Amazon at a much lower price, with excellent customer reviews.

If a knife cuts, it works. Why should people think about spending hundreds on Cutco’s product if they can find a cheaper alternative that serves the same purpose?

I believe overpriced products will only hurt one’s sales severely.

2. Misleading Information and Exaggerating Claims

Vector Marketing is infamous for recruiting high school and undergraduate students.

Here’re the screenshots I captured on Consumer Affairs to support my claims:

Customers complain about Vector Marketing for making false claims on their income potential to students.

Because of their misleading information in the so-called “job vacancy,” many students found out the company is actually exaggerating the income potential and benefits after joining the program.

This is unethical at all, as Vector Marketing is making the recruitment looks like a predatory.

You can read numerous students’ full reviews on Vector Marketing here.

3. Multiple Lawsuits Have Been Filed

If the negative reviews weren’t enough, there have been multiple lawsuits recorded against Vector Marketing.

1990: The Arizona Attorney General sued vector Marketing for the deceptive compensation system.

1994: Wisconsin ordered them to stop deceptive recruiting practices, leading the company to stop recruiting temporarily.

2003: A group of college students co-founded a group – “Students Against Vector Exploitation” (SAVE) to expose Vector Marketing’s “unethical” recruiting practices.

2008: They were sued for failing to pay minimum wages to their sales reps.

2014: Vector Marketing was sued for not providing proper training to prevent female salespersons from violently sexually assaulted by customers.

2017: Vector Marketing was sued by a division manager who alleged that the company was engaging in unfair labor practices.

Apparently, working as a sales rep at Vector Marketing doesn’t seem promising at all.

What Do I Like About Vector Marketing?

I don’t think there’s anything great about the company that worth mentioning. This company doesn’t have any unique selling points that caught my attention.

So, Is Vector Marketing A SCAM?

Technically no, they’re not a SCAM. They’re a legitimate direct selling company that provides you the necessary training and marketing resources to make money with their parent company – Cutco Cutlery.

Although I say they’re legit, it’s still not the best business opportunity that I can recommend because of their bad reputation in public.

Even if I say so, the choice is still yours. There’re no right and wrong answers for you to decide which business model you want to get involved.

However, you should do some planning and calculation in advance to see if that business opportunity is worth your time and money or not.

You Deserve A Better Opportunity

Kudos to you! You’ve just read 2100+ words and still counting. If you make it this far, I commend your commitment.

Meanwhile, I can also feel how serious you’re when it comes to finding a proper way to make money from home.

As you might know, MLM is a flawed business model.

For sure, there’re still people who make a good amount of money with MLM. But it often represents a tiny group of people who joined the program early.

That said, it’s challenging for people who’re BOPs (bottom-of-pyramid) to make some serious dough because they’re running out of people to “recruit”.

MLM Unilevel Compensation Structure

Instead, Affiliate Marketing is my top recommended business model for anyone to make money from home.

The reason is simple…

Advantage 1: No Recruitment Needed

  • You don’t need to “chase” after people and talk them into MLM opportunity where most people lose money.

Advantage 2: Freedom of Choice

  • You can promote any products you love and not be restricted only to promote the products from one MLM company.

Advantage 3: Low Startup Cost

  • Unlike MLM, where you’ll need to pay a pricy introductory fee to join, it takes little to no startup cost to kickstart your entrepreneurial journey in Affiliate Marketing.

You might think I’m biased, but I’m just telling the truths…
