What Is Optavia?
Optavia is an MLM company that offers a range of weight loss and meal replacement products to customers.
There’s no disclosure who owns the business on their official website, and there’s mixed information on the internet about the founders of this company.
So I assume the real business owner is either Dr. Wayne S. Andersen/Bradley T. Macdonald/Daniel Chard.
Background of Optavia
- 1980 – Daniel Chard founded Medifast, which is a very reputable weight loss company.
- 2002 – Either Dr. Wayne S. Andersen/Bradley T. Macdonald/Daniel Chard launched ‘Take Shape For Life‘ – a subsidiary company of Medifast.
- 2016 – ‘Take Shape For Life’ was rebranded to ‘Optivia.’
The background of Optavia is actually very complicated, and I’ve made it as simple as possible for your better understanding.
However, company background is not the most crucial part. I’m just laying out the facts for your information.
Optavia’s Product Line
Overall, there’s only one kind of product that Optavia offers, namely, meal replacement.
But, Optavia has many subdivisions of meal replacement, and the table below shows you some of their popular categories.
|Optimal Weight 5&1||$414.60 to $448.60||Roughly 23 days’ supply|
|Optimal Weight 4&2&1||$408||35 days’ supply|
|Optimal Weight 3&3||$333||43 days’ supply|
Obviously, all the products are quite pricy. Here’re some examples of foods included in each meal replacement packages:
- Mac & Cheese
How To Join Optavia And Make Money?
Just like any other typical MLM company, there are 3 main ways to make money with Optavia.
- Retail commission: Earn commission through selling products.
- Recruitment commission: Earn commission through recruitment.
- Residual commission: Earn a percentage of commissions from your downlines when they make sales. The more people you recruit and they constantly make sales, the more money you’ll make.
Unlike the first 2 ways, which are in terms of qualification and payout, residual commissions are generation based, with several performance-based bonuses also on offer.
For your better understanding, I’ll show you a step-by-step guide of the process from joining Optavia to start making money with them.
Step 1: The Joining Fee
In most cases, an upfront funding or joining fee is always a MUST no matter what MLM business you decide to get into. Optavia has no exception for this.
To be honest, I think the joining fee of Optavia is quite expensive for most people.
You’ll need to purchase the “Health Coach Business Kit” at $199, which provides you all the necessary training and marketing materials to help you get started.
After you purchased this kit, you’ll get promoted as the “Health Coach” of Optavia.
Step 2: Understand the basics of Optavia’s Compensation Plan and Start Making Money!
The compensation plan of Optavia is 20 pages long. You can read the full pdf file by clicking here.
However, I don’t think you need to understand the whole concept or even memorizing it. It’s quite complicated (at least for me), and it might eat up a lot of your time.
Hence, I’ll give you a brief explanation of the core elements that mentioned in their plan.
The Compensation Plan
Here’s the screenshot of their compensation plan:
Overall, it means you’ve got the chance to get promoted across the board and earn commissions from your downlines up to 6 levels deep.
In other words, you can build a team up to 6 tiers and earn commissions from them.
Here’s how your downlines look like:
Although the figure above only shows until the second level of your networks, you can still imagine how big is the number of people under your network up to the sixth level.
If they’re loyal and often making sales, you’ll be earning a good amount of passive income every single month.
Sounds like a get-rich-quick program? But the truth is: It’s challenging to sell Optavia’s expensive products, let alone building up your solid team.
However, it’s possible for you to achieve the goal unless you’re a shy and introverted person like me.

5 Reasons Why I Don't Recommend Optavia
1. Fake Coach
You probably have noticed that as long as the person has enough upfront funding, he/she can be the so-called “Health Coach” at Optavia.
They don’t need a certification from the authorized agency to be the Health Coach, even if they have poor eating habits themselves.
This is misleading for newbies as they might misunderstand that they’ll get a real wellness expert who can help them to lose weight and live healthier.
In the end, they’ll only discover that the coach is not here to help them, but sell them products and recruit them as downline instead.
2. Expensive Fees and Products
Whether the products or introductory fees, both are quite expensive for me, and I believe most people would agree with my words, too.
This will only increase your difficulty in marketing the products, and your recruitment journey might be harder than you think.
Not everyone could afford a meal replacement that costs $300+ or join an MLM program with such an expensive introductory fee.
3. Unsustainable Business Opportunity
It’s possible to lose weight by controlling what you eat and using meal replacement.
But how long do you think a person can withstand such a lifestyle that he/she can only consume meal replacements?
I’ve tried it before, and the meal replacement that I consume is from another brand (Herbalife), which they are mainly offering nutritional milkshake powder.
Let me be honest with you, I give up this kind of lifestyle after 1 month. I’m a “Gym” guy who workout a lot. Hence, I need a lot of high-protein food to fuel up my energy and for muscle-recovery.
The first problem that I faced at that time is I’ve to drink a lot of milkshakes every day, and they run out very quickly, which then brings up the second problem…
They are EXPENSIVE! Like Optavia, the products of Herbalife are not cheap too. And I really can’t afford to spend $600+ for meal replacements that can only last for 30 days or even less!
I believe most customers will face the same issues as mine if they get started with Optavia.
4. Bad Feedbacks From Customers
As of 13 April 2020, Better Business Bureau has received a total of 196 complaints from customers on Optavia.
As there’s a saying goes: “Images speak louder than words.” Here’re some of the screenshots as proof to support my claim:
Are you really going to trust a company with so many poor customer feedback? I doubt it.
5. Low Income Potential
The figure below is the annual income range of Optavia in 2017.
As you can see from the data, only 4.4% of people are making more than the annual minimum wage (average $20,000 globally), what a pathetic fact?!
That’s why I’ll never recommend this opportunity to anyone because there’s no point in investing all your money and time into business for a little payoff.
What Do I like About Optavia?
Although there are so many downsides in this company, there’s still one thing I like about Optavia.
They Have 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee
Yes, I like this because a good refund policy could help a company to gain trust from customers easier.
It’s also necessary because not everyone will like the taste of the meal replacement offered by Optavia.
Also, sometimes customers will receive wrong or damaged products from the company. I know it’s quite rare, but it still can happen anytime.
If you’re not satisfied with the products, you can still apply for a refund within 30 days.
So, Is Optavia a Scam?
After hours of research, I can say that Optavia is not a scam.
It’s a health and wellness MLM company with a solid background, and it reveals you all the required information like compensation plan and income disclosure.
But to be honest, it’s not the best business opportunity that I can recommend to you because of its income potential is way too low!
Additionally, starting an MLM business is rarely a good idea, and not beginner friendly, compared to other business model like affiliate marketing and dropshipping.
According to the report from FTC, they claimed that only the top 1% of people are able to make money in MLM, and most of them are top-of-the-pyramid promoters. Here’s the screenshot of the report as a proof:
Meanwhile, you’ve to understand that your income is entirely reliant on your downlines in MLM. If they don’t sell, you’ll never earn a penny.
Even if I say so, the choice is still yours. There’re no right and wrong answers for you to decide which business model you want to get involved.
But, it’s better for you to do some planning and calculation in advance to see if that business opportunity is worth your time and money or not.
You Deserve A Better Opportunity
Kudos to you! You’ve just read 1800+ words and still counting. If you make it this far, I commend your commitment.
Meanwhile, I can also feel how serious you’re when it comes to finding a proper way to make money from home.
As you might know, MLM is a flawed business model.
For sure, there’re still people who make a good amount of money with MLM. But it often represents a tiny group of people who joined the program early.
That said, it’s challenging for people who’re BOPs (bottom-of-pyramid) to make some serious dough because they’re running out of people to “recruit”.
Instead, Affiliate Marketing is my top recommended business model for anyone to make money from home.
The reason is simple…
Advantage 1: No Recruitment Needed
- You don’t need to “chase” after people and talk them into MLM opportunity where most people lose money.
Advantage 2: Freedom of Choice
- You can promote any products you love and not be restricted only to promote the products from one MLM company.
Advantage 3: Low Startup Cost
- Unlike MLM, where you’ll need to pay a pricy introductory fee to join, it takes little to no startup cost to kickstart your entrepreneurial journey in Affiliate Marketing.
You might think I’m biased, but I’m just telling the truths…
