YouTube has almost 2 billion active users every month, watching videos in more than 80 languages.
Besides, it gets over 30 million visitors per day, and altogether, over 6 billion hours of video are viewed on YouTube every month.
You can always find such mind-blowing stats about YouTube on the internet. It’s a booming platform that is considered the second largest search engine just before Google.
With such significant traffic loaded on YouTube, smart marketers saw the opportunity inside this platform and utilizing video marketing to generate massive revenue.
There’re many ways to monetize a YouTube channel, and affiliate marketing is just one of them. In this post, I’ll share all the actionable tips and tricks that you can use to do affiliate marketing on YouTube.
Without further ado, let’s delve into it.
Table of Contents
Who Is YouTube Affiliate Marketing For?
#1: People Who Want To Learn New Skills/Build The Second Income Source
Affiliate marketing is considered a high-income skill. If you spend time to learn how to do it the right way, it could make you tons of money in the future.
But the premise is that you have to be willing to be a lifelong learner. There’re lots of things to awaiting for you to learn or explore in affiliate marketing.
#2: People Who Run On A Tight Budget And Want To Get Started Fast
Most people think that fancy equipment like DSLR camera, GoPro, microphone, and lighting setups are the must-have to run a successful YouTube channel.
It’s true that if you want to create high-quality videos, you need all of the tools. But if you are just starting with little startup capital, making a significant financial investment on the pricey tools is impossible.
In fact, you can just use PowerPoint with screen recorder software, and narrate a presentation for your audience.
Other than that, you can use paid software like VideoScribe to create an intriguing animate video that is tied to your affiliate offers.
Seriously, you don’t need to spend thousands of dollars on high-end equipment for this. You just have to be creative and resourceful to find the way that work for you.
When you have made to a point where your channel starts to get some traction and bring you affiliate revenue, you can always reinvest that money to upgrade your equipment later.
Oh! Did I forget, the ways that I just mentioned just now (shooting video with Powerpoint or VideoScribe), the best part is that you don’t even need to show your face on camera. So if you’re super shy, these methods might be for you.
#3: People Who Are Interested In Creating Videos
Now, this is a big deal. You have to understand that creating videos is not an easy task as opposed to blogging (which is another way to do affiliate marketing). It takes dedication and time to create videos.
I have experience in both channels before. But now, I prefer blogging because creating videos is not my forte, and I am an introvert who is shy and uncomfortable in front of the camera.
If you aren’t interested in video creation like me, it can quickly become an overwhelming task, and you WILL lose interest in your business very soon.
Step-by-Step Guide To Do Affiliate Marketing On YouTube
Step #1: Pick A Niche
No matter how you want to start affiliate marketing, whether it’s through YouTube videos, blogging, or other channel, you always get started by picking a suitable niche.
Picking a niche that you are interested in is crucial because you’ll create content around the niche you have chosen. It can be your interest, hobby, passion, or anything you love to share with everybody else.
Here’s a great article with a video walkthrough on choosing the best niche for your business. You’ll need to sign up for an account to access the resources, but it’s free to sign up.
Step #2: Find Relevant Affiliate Program
There’re hundreds of thousands of affiliate programs in the world. So you can literally find the relevant affiliate program that is a great fit for your targeted audiences that you have been called to serve.
FYI, here is a list of the most popular affiliate programs and affiliate networks:
- Amazon Associates
- eBay Partners
- Clickbank (Affiliate network)
- ShareASale (Affiliate network)
- CJ Affiliate (Affiliate network)
- Rakuten Advertising (Affiliate network)
Digital products often have a higher commission rate than physical products.
Suppose you want to double the affiliate revenue and build a passive income stream, you can go for the affiliate programs/networks that offer digital products with high recurring commissions.
Step #3: Set Up Your YouTube Channel
Setting up a YouTube channel is extremely easy. And I assume you might know how to do it already.
If you don’t, there are a lot of free tutorials showing you how to do that. This guide will focus more on the “monetization” part.
FYI, here’s a great article showing you how to set up a YouTube channel properly with just a few clicks.
Step #4: Create An Compelling Opt-in Page (Optional)
An opt-in page is also known as a “squeeze page”, it’s a single landing page to capture the customer leads (i.e. email address and first name) for further following up and get repeat sales.
In my opinion, growing an email list is quite essential because it’s the most valuable asset for your affiliate marketing business.
With affiliate marketing, your role is like being a promoter or middleman of our partnered vendor and the potential buyers.
If you just send the traffic straight to the merchant site without “squeezing” out the leads and grow your email list, you are actually letting go of the traffic that you can “owned”.
Meaning, when you have a huge enough list, you don’t have to just rely on free traffic from YouTube. You can use email marketing to bring in more affiliate sales. If you nurture a great relationship with your email subscribers, they will follow you for life.
Nevertheless, some people think that this isn’t necessary. So it’s completely up to you whether you want to spend time growing your own email list or not.
In order for the web visitors to give you their emails, you have to offer them something valuable for free.
People often called this free stuff as a “Lead Magnet”, which will attract the leads like a magnet.
It could be an e-book, a coupon, a video, a membership site, or just about anything related to your core affiliate offer.
Step #5: Keyword Research
A “keyword” is a word or phrase that someone types into a search engine to find things they are looking for online. In layman terms, people called it a “search term”.
Conducting proper keyword research before creating your content plays a pivotal role in bringing you free traffic from YouTube and Google search results page, or even getting your videos ranked on the “YouTube related videos” section.
Targeting a good keyword strategically in your videos and YouTube descriptions will give you more advantages than other people who just publishing random videos and then “hope and pray” their videos will go viral.
And the best part is that quality keyword-oriented YouTube videos tend to be more SEO-friendly than blog posts because most people prefer videos over text. Meaning, it’s relatively easy to get your video ranked at the top of the search engines and get a higher click-through-rate.
Ideally, you want to find long-tail keywords with a high search volume and low competition, so that your video could be ranked faster.
You can find low competition long-tail keywords related to your niche using Jaaxy, and it’s the free keyword research tool that I use the most.
Jaaxy will provide lots of helpful information about the seed keyword you entered and other related search queries, as shown in the figure below.
The term “QSR” used in Jaaxy stands for Quoted Search Results. It’s the number of competing websites ranked in Google for this exact keyword.
In this case, the QSR of “Why Affiliate Marketing Is Better Than MLM” is 26, which means that I would have only 26 competitors (super low competition). Meanwhile, the search engine optimization (SEO) score of that keyword is as high as 94!
Please note, Jaaxy is mainly used for keyword research for a blog.
So after you did some research, and found that the keywords that you have chosen don’t have any related video content on Google and YouTube, it might be a great keyword to target as there’s a little to zero competition.
You can rinse and repeat this process to explore the potential keywords with low competition that could bring you consistent traffic.

Step #6: Create Keyword-Rich Videos With Intent
Now, you have found some potential keywords. The next thing to do is creating video content around those keywords with compelling descriptions. Targeting one keyword per content is enough.
Let’s talk about the YouTube description first.
A good YouTube description always starts with a nice “hook” that grabs people’s attention, and then when people click the ‘Show More’ button, they will be reading the intriguing “story” that talks about video content.
Eventually, they will be given an “offer” (your affiliate link) that asks them to purchase the cool stuff that you reviewed in the video.
If you’re a big fan of Russell Brunson and have ever read his book – Expert Secrets, you will know what I am saying.
The copywriting techniques that I just showed you are adopting the concept of “Hook, Story, And Offer” introduced by Russell Brunson in his book.
As for the video content, There are various forms of affiliate videos, the most popular are:
Product unboxing and reviews
➜ Plain and simple. Before you open a product that you just bought, you can set up the camera, put on your microphone, and then film your reaction as you go through the opening process.
It’s fine if you don’t want to show your face, you can shoot the entire review video faceless and then integrate it with your voice over later, just like the video below:
➜ This kind of videos is focused on teaching people how to use a certain type of product or show them how to use the more advanced features.
For example, if you’re familiar Elementor page builder tool, you can be an affiliate of Elementor and create tutorial videos about using the tools to create stunning websites.
‘Best of’ videos
➜ ‘Best of’ videos are basically introducing the nitty-gritty of your top-listed products and tell your audience why they should buy it, how the products could benefit them and ask them to get the products through your affiliate links.
Product Comparison Videos
➜ As the title said, you will be comparing 2 products (or more) in the video and talking about each of the products’ pros and cons.
Just like the ‘Best Of’ videos, your opinion matters here. At the end of the video, you can give your opinion on the products, and suggest your audiences go for the one that would be beneficial to them.
In most cases, your loyal fans will take your suggestion and buy the product through your affiliate link if they need it asap.
Step #7: Work Hard & Be Patient
Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. I am sure you have heard of this multiple times already. There’s just no such thing as “free lunch”.
When you are just starting with low startup capital, you can only rely on free organic traffic to attract people to watch your video. It will take some strategy and dedication to grow your subscribers and get traffic steadily.
Consistency is key when it comes to acquiring success in affiliate marketing. Just be persistent enough to produce quality content on the products you feature, and I am sure you will note the difference a year later.
Why Can YouTube Affiliate Marketing Be Extremely Profitable?
#1: Video Marketing Is Powerful
We, as human beings, are visual by nature.
From a young age, we grow up reading books that are “visual,” and we never really lose our desire for this as we get older. That’s why most people love to consume video than a plain text article.
Also, there is a reason why apps like Instagram, Tik Tok, and Snapchat are some of the world’s world’s most popular services. They are entirely visual!
As a result, video marketing becomes more and more prominent and dominates consumer internet traffic because it’s a more compelling way to reach audiences and easily share your product.
You can leverage YouTube to start your affiliate career. It’s the lasting medium built for video creators, with billions of users every month.
#2: Earn People’s Trust More Easily
The audience size on YouTube is not only big, but it is also actively engaged. So it can be a great promotional tool to connect with people.
You can gain people’s trust easily if they found your videos helpful.
And if they have the same interests as yours, they will become your subscribers, which will bring you more affiliate sales if you develop a great rapport with your fans by continually providing them values.
#3: Easy SEO
Technically, it is much easier to gain traffic to your YouTube videos than blog posts because Google knows that people love videos than text.
If you do your due diligence on keyword research, see what people are looking for, and create a video to solve/answer their problem, it could be ranked higher any blog posts on the search engine results page.
Higher ranking = More traffic = More sales could be generated as a result.
