The process of becoming an affiliate marketer is pretty straightforward.
You signed up an affiliate program and started promoting the product across your blog or social media. When someone clicks on it and buys through your links, you get paid.
Everything looks so simple, but then getting people to buy the product isn’t easy.
Chances are, you’ve ventured into the world of Affiliate Marketing for quite a while now, and you might hit the bottleneck recently.
This may be affected by your Sales Funnel in your affiliate business, which isn’t executed the right way.
Unlike other articles that you searched before, which probably only give all the “theoretical” stuff, I will provide you with something practical and actionable that you can take away and implement today.
The biggest difference between most of my competitors and me is that I actually do this for real. That’s right, I’ve used everything that I am about to show you.

What Is Sales Funnel?
Sales Funnel is one of the core concepts in the digital marketing industry.
To explain the meaning of Sales Funnel, here is how I define it:
A Sales Funnel is the designed sales process that your potential consumers go through before making a purchase.
Its goal is often to sell a product or service, but it can also be used to capture leads for further following up with an automated email campaign.
The typical sales funnel follows a 3-step process, which encompasses:
To make this concept more understandable:
- At first, a company will advertise their product/service to get the attention of potential buyers. (Awareness)
- Then, a smaller part of the audience will be interested in the product/service and want to learn more. (Interest)
- At the end of the funnel, there is only a smaller part of that interested audience who may purchase the product/service. (Sales)
Why Is Sales Funnel Crucial?
#1: Helping you to build an email list.
There’s a saying in affiliate marketing:
“If you aren’t building a list, you aren’t building your business.”
Think about this;
If you’re sending your traffic directly to the merchant site without collecting the email addresses, you’ve got no chance to follow up with potential customers. And that means you’re giving up the future sales.
Make sense, right?
#2: Improve your marketing approach easily.
A clear Sales Funnel in your affiliate marketing business enables you to visualize the sales process better.
Since every page represents a specific process in your funnel and all results are tracked, it enables you to visualize the sales process better.
You can get an idea of which processes are working and which ones are the weaker links that need to be improved.
For instance, let’s say you’ve got a 20% opt-in rate, and 60% of people who end up going to your merchant site and purchase the affiliate product/service.
You can quickly know that there’s something you need to improve on your opt-in page.
#3: Enhance your customer’s experience.
The traditional website often has more than many options that would distract the customers from the main offer, or even worse, they LEAVE because there’s no clear instruction that tells them what to do next.
Sales Funnel is different. It eliminates all the unnecessary options that would confuse your customer and only FOCUS one call-to-action (CTA) on each funnel step.
This could enhance the customer experience as they aren’t confused. Eventually, it’ll be bringing in more sales.
How To Create A Sales Funnel For Your Affiliate Marketing Business?
Without writing any longer, here’s a doodle drawing that shows the Affiliate Marketing Sales Funnel that I personally use in my business.
Let me break down the process and explain what you should do on each step of the funnel. Let’s delve into it.
1) Traffic Source
There are actually a few different ways to do affiliate marketing.
So the first step of the entire Sales Funnel is to figure out how to drive traffic to your opt-in page by producing content on the platform that suits you.
Here are the 3 common ways to start affiliate marketing:
This often represents the people who boast a huge following on social media like Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, and YouTube.
As these people have developed a great rapport with their followers, it’s easier for them to benefit from affiliate marketing by directing their followers to the Opt-in page and get their email addresses.
“How do you make money by blogging?” This is probably the most asked question from my friends and family.
There are many ways to monetize your blog, and affiliate marketing is just one of them.
With the ability to utilize Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to get first-page ranking on the search engine queries, they can drive tons of traffic to their blog and then promote the affiliate product that they found helpful and trustworthy.
iii) Paid Ads Strategies
I have seen many people using paid ads strategies to promote the products from the affiliate networks like Clickbank, JV Zoo, and Warrior Plus.
This could be the method most people use because it’s easier and can be scaled very fast.
Although this could be the easiest way to make money with affiliate marketing, I prefer using the “old-school” way (Free Traffic).
The reason is simple…
When you stop buying ads, you’ll lose web traffic. And hence, your income will stop at the same time, unless the product that you promote does provide recurring commissions, and you already own a large enough email list.
To me, free traffic is a long-term strategy that can bring me consistent traffic every month without costing me a single dime.
I understand, free traffic method like SEO takes time to build. But most newbies have no large capital to startup.
That’s why I think focusing on one channel (Blogging, Youtube, Instagram, etc.) to drive free traffic is a better way because my personal view on that is: if you don’t have money, you have time.
Also, managing the paid ads campaigns is not an easy task, and the advertising fees are usually not affordable for a beginner who is running on a tight budget.
If you’ve no prior experience to run the paid ads campaign, you’re basically lighting money on fire.
If you ask me what my recommended channels for newbies to start affiliate marketing are, I would probably say YouTube for people who are comfortable speaking in front of the camera and Blogging for people are introverted and shy (like me).
The main reason why I recommend these 2 channels is that I understand how powerful that SEO could be.
FYI, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of optimizing your blog posts or YouTube videos to get free organic traffic from the search engines.
To make it more understandable, SEO is a free way you can use to let the search engines like Google to give your blog posts or YouTube video a high ranking on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).
If they could be ranked on the first page on search engines, the more traffic you’ll be acquired, the more revenue would be generated.
2) Opt-in Page
This is where you convince your web visitors to sign up for your email list.
In order to capture your visitors’ email addresses effectively, you’ll need to offer a “sexy” lead magnet for them.
It could be an e-book, a coupon, a contest, a video, a membership site, or just about anything else you could dream of.
Nobody will be willing to give you their email unless you’re providing something valuable to them.
*Bonus Tips* Here are the things that you need to be aware while designing an opt-in page:
i) Captivating Headline
The headline, sometimes also known as “Hook” in marketing terms, is one of the most important parts of your opt-in page.
It tells the reader what’s your offer is all about in a glance, and it’s the X factor that determines how well your opt-in rate could be.
The more curiosity you can put into your headline, the more likely they will be to give you their email address.
If your opt-in rate is low, it usually because your headline or the lead magnet you provide isn’t good enough.
ii) The Word “Ebook” Is Obsolete
Even though the lead magnet that you provide is an ebook (better not too long), try not to use the work “Ebook” as the name of your lead magnet. Let’s face it. Nobody likes reading a 200 pages book.
Instead, you can use words like:
- Resource List
iii) Social Proof
You can use social proof elements like the total number of people who’ve claimed your lead magnet and their testimonials.
You can also use your personal results to enhance your credibility to give them a reason why they should trust you.
3) Pre-sell Page
The pre-sell page’s purpose is to “warm-up” the audiences before sending them to the merchant site.
Some people might think this step is optional.
They would just put a simple thank you page that thanks to the visitors for grabbing their lead magnet and signing up for their email list.
And then, they would promote the affiliate product to email subscribers through email marketing.
Personally, I like to pre-sell them my core offer right after they give me their email.
When a person is willing to say “Yes” on the first time by giving me their email address, they’re more likely to say a second “Yes” if I promote my core affiliate product on the pre-sell page if the vendor has provided a trial membership.
4) Merchant Site
When your customers reached this stage, you’ve done a pretty good job, and the merchant will handle the rest.
The sales you generated will be tracked, and the merchant will pay you the commission you deserve.
5) Email Follow Up
Email marketing is just like a backup plan that I used to follow up on my potential customers who don’t end up purchasing my affiliate product.
Unless you have a considerable list, don’t bother too much on email marketing first. Spending more time on perfecting your sales funnel and producing content would be more practical, in my opinion.
Common Mistakes That Beginners Make When Creating An Affiliate Funnel
1) Lack of Relevancy
According to Wikipedia, the word ‘RELEVANT’ means:
“closely connected or appropriate to what is being done or considered”
Meaning, if you’re blogging about orange juice, you’re not going to sell someone an apple in the end.
You gonna make sure the entire funnel is relevant from search to conversion. In other words, you need to keep every step relevant to the previous.
2) Promoting Sh*tty Product
If you want to avoid promoting terrible affiliate products that make you less money in a long run, make sure you choose a good relevant affiliate product that fit the criteria below:
i) High Commission
~ An affiliate product that has at least 20% commission is great.
ii) Recurring Commission
~ Promoting an affiliate product with the recurring commission a great way to build a Passive Income stream.
This is because you’ll be getting a commission as long as the customer keeps using that product.
iii) Solves a Huge Pain Problem
~ This is pretty straightforward. If the product can solve a huge pain problem among people, it would be an easy sell.
3) Focus on Too Many Products
When you’re first getting started with affiliate marketing, being an associate of one or two affiliate programs is enough. It could be Clickbank, Rakuten, JV Zoo, CJ Affiliate, etc.
In most cases, promoting dozens of products from multiple affiliate networks couldn’t make you more money.
On the contrary, it would make things worse as it’s tough to manage, and you’ve no core offer that you can leverage to maximize the earning potential.
4) Not Building An Email List
As I mentioned earlier, building your email list is crucial for building a successful affiliate marketing business for the long term.
By building an email list, you can use it to follow-up the potential buyers and the future sales of other relevant affiliate products.
5) Not Making Use of Visuals
If you are creating pages that are a “sea” of words, then don’t expect a high conversion rate in your funnel because people are simply impatient nowadays, and nobody would read long paragraphs of texts.
You will get much less engagement as people will not immerse themselves within the content on your website.
If you can add relevant imagery/videos to all of your sales pages, you will see a lot more successful in terms of content readership (the percentage of people who read your content).
There is a reason why completely visual websites like Pinterest and apps like Instagram & Tik Tok are some of the most popular services in the world. They are entirely visual!
6) Boring Lead Magnet & Headlines
As I said, if you’ve boring lead magnet and headlines that don’t “excite” your audiences in a certain way, you’re done.
Put yourself in customer’s shoes and think about the lead magnet and headlines (Hooks) that could catch their attention and persuade them to give you their email.
Meanwhile, you could find the inspiration by finding other successful funnels, and reverse engineer what is already working to turn them into better versions.
Now, you’ve got the sneak peek inside the sales funnel that I use in my affiliate business.
One thing to bear in mind here; Whatever business you’re in, the first thing you should do is always providing values to your audiences before you ask something from them.
So you can see the aim of my funnel is to entice the person into signing up first by providing them values, and selling comes the second.
Although you could copy the entire process, the sales funnel I just described is not the only way to set up a sales funnel.
The steps inside the sales funnel may vary based on your affiliate product and other outside factors. Some funnels will take a slightly different form than others.
Thus, I would suggest you understand your affiliate product first and then map out every necessary procedure inside your funnel.
Remember to track everything inside the funnel, so you can quickly determine the weakest link and improve it later.
This is how you will be able to create the perfect sales funnel for your affiliate marketing business.
